Business Data Partners London recently spent the day with our charity partner, Hestia, volunteering at their annual Big Day Out.

Hestia is our London charity that we are working with throughout 2019. Hestia is a charity supporting adults and children in times of crisis. They deliver services across London and surrounding regions, in addition to national campaigns that advocate for the issues that affect the people Hestia works with. In 2018 Hestia supported 9,799 men women and children in the following areas:

  • Victims of modern slavery
  • Women and children who have experienced domestic abuse
  • Young care leavers at risk
  • Older people
  • Mental health and complex needs
  • Learning disabilities
  • Physical disabilities
  • Offender rehabilitation
  • Drugs and alcohol support

The ways in which Hestia provides support is broad, catering specifically to the needs of those they are helping. These include services such as:

  • Floating community support
  • Supported accommodation and safe houses
  • Day Centres
  • Hospital Discharge assistance
  • Befriending
  • School holiday programmes
  • Financial management assistance

On Tuesday 20th August Hestia hosted their annual Summer Event, The Big Day Out. This is a fun day put on by Hestia and supported by their charity partners like us. The day is for families currently living in Hestia’s domestic abuse refuges and supported by Hestia’s modern slavery response team and phoenix project. The day provides an opportunity for a fun, family day out at no cost.

BDP took 7 consultants to teach the children, some adults and even other volunteers the art of coding whilst also briefly explaining how we would apply what we’d taught them in our day to day jobs.

We used some simple online games that used Python or JavaScript to guide their chosen characters through a series of levels to reach the end goal. Even though they weren’t in each of the consultants chosen coding language, it helped us show those taking part how to apply logic in different ways and use the coding to solve problems set out in front of them.

BDP wasn’t the only corporate partner supporting Hestia. PZ Cussons Beauty, Winckworth Sherwood and Hogan Lovells also attended facilitating other activities like face painting, glitter art and cake decorating. The children also had outdoor games to play including connect 4 and Jenga. If the kids had tackled all that there was an inflatable obstacle course on hand for them to battle through and to finish the day there was a raffle and tombola with prizes for all those that attended!

A massive thanks to all those from BDP that took time out of their days to support Hestia’s event, Sarah Fountain, Rob Floyd, Andy King, Darshan Jayakumar, Kirsty Canning, Nathan Mukhtar and Joe Russell
